A pool in a bare yard is a hole full of water. What makes it a destination is everything around it — the decking underfoot, where you sit and eat, how the sun and wind work at four in the afternoon, what you can and cannot see from the neighbours' upstairs window, and how the whole thing looks for the eight months a year it is covered. Decking material is a comfort and safety decision

Two properties matter more than appearance: slip resistance when wet and surface temperature in direct sun. Some beautiful stone becomes genuinely painful to walk on barefoot in August, and some smooth finishes are hazardous wet. There is also the freeze-thaw question — poolside surfaces are saturated constantly through the season, which is hard on materials that absorb water. We will steer you toward materials that hold up on all three counts.

Barriers and code

Pool barrier requirements are not optional and vary between jurisdictions in Kootenai County. Fence heights, gate hardware, self-closing and self-latching mechanisms, and the treatment of the house wall as part of the barrier all have specific rules. Designed in from the start, a barrier can be genuinely attractive — integrated into walls, planting, and level changes. Added afterwards to satisfy an inspector, it looks exactly like what it is.

Designing for a short season and a long off-season

This is the North Idaho reality worth planning around: the pool is in use for a minority of the year and looks at you for the rest. That argues for designing the surrounding space to work independently of the pool — a fire feature and seating that are pleasant in October, planting that carries winter structure, and lighting that makes the area look intentional when the cover is on. It also means thinking about where equipment lives, how the cover is stored, and where snow gets cleared to.

What drives the cost

For the landscape scope specifically: total decking area and material, how much grade and retaining work the site needs, barrier and fencing requirements, whether structures such as a cabana are included, utility runs, site access, and the extent of surrounding features like kitchens, fire, and screening.
