Anyone who has hung holiday lights on a North Idaho roofline in December understands the appeal immediately. Permanent lighting is a track of individually addressable LEDs installed under the eave or fascia during good weather, wired properly, and controlled from an app — so the ladder comes out once, not every year. Why it is not just holiday lights

This is the misconception worth correcting. Most clients use permanent lighting as architectural accent lighting for the majority of the year — a warm white wash that highlights the rooflines, gables, and proportions of the house after dark. The holiday capability is a feature, not the purpose. A well-programmed system makes the house look considered every night of the year, and then does red and green for three weeks in December.

What it does

• Individually addressable LEDs — every diode can be a different colour and brightness.
• Warm white architectural lighting for everyday use, which is what most clients run most nights.
• Full-colour scenes for holidays, seasons, game days, and events.
• App and schedule control — on at dusk, off at a set hour, automatically.
• Zoning, so different sections of the house can be controlled independently.
• Dimming, which matters enormously for taste — most of these systems look best well below full output.

Installation quality is what you are buying

The visible difference between a good and a poor installation is whether you can see the track during the day. Done well, the channel tucks into the eave line and reads as trim. Done poorly, there is a visible strip of plastic on the front of the house permanently. Beyond appearance: weather-rated components and connections that survive freeze-thaw and ice damming, proper electrical with a protected circuit, controllers mounted somewhere serviceable and protected, and channel secured so ice and snow load do not pull it loose. Roofline complexity determines much of the labour.

Honest expectations

These systems look best when programmed with restraint — the colour-chasing animations that sell the product in demonstrations get old quickly, and most owners settle into warm white with occasional colour. Output at full brightness is considerable, so dimming and scheduling matter for both neighbourly relations and taste. And like any exterior electrical system, components have a service life; quality of the initial hardware determines how long.

What drives the cost

Primarily linear footage of roofline covered and the complexity of that roofline — multiple gables, dormers, varying heights, and steep pitches all add labour. Beyond that: system and hardware quality, number of zones and controllers, electrical work required, whether trim colour matching is needed, and access difficulty for high or steep sections.
